इस परिवार की किसी लेखन प्रणाली को ब्राह्मी-आधारित लिपि या भारतीय लिपि कहा जा सकता है।

इन लिपियों का प्रयोग कई भाषा परिवारों में होता था, उदाहरणार्थ इंडो-यूरोपियाई, चीनी-तिब्बती, मंगोलियाई, द्रविडीय, ऑस्ट्रो-एशियाई, ऑस्ट्रोनेशियाई, ताई और संभवतः कोरियाई में। इनका प्रभाव आधुनिक जापानी भाषा में प्रयुक्त अक्षर क्रमांकन पर भी दिखता है।

ब्राह्मी-आधारित लिपियाँ ब्राह्मी लिपि से उपजी हैं। ईसा पूर्व तीसरी सदी में अशोक के राज्यकाल में ब्राह्मी का प्रयोग का साक्ष्य मिलता है, उन्होंने इस लिपि का इस्तेमाल साम्राज्यीय शिलालेखों के लिए किया था। लेकिन इसके अलावा, हाल ही में, श्री लंका में अनुराधापुर में ईसा पूर्व छठी सदी के समय के मिट्टी के बर्तनों पर सिंहल ब्राह्मी में लिखे कुछ भंजित शिलालेख मिले हैं। ईसा पूर्व चौथी या पाँचवी सदी के तमिल ब्राह्मी के नमूने भी भट्टिप्रोलु व अन्यत्र मिले हैं।

सिद्धम (कांजी: 悉曇, आधुनिक जापानी उच्चारण: शित्तन) लिपि बौद्ध धर्म के लिए काफ़ी महत्वपूर्ण थी क्योंकि कई सूत्र इसी में लिखे गए थे और आज भी जापान में सिद्धम सुलेख की कला कायम है।

दक्षिणी ब्राह्मी से ग्रन्थ लिपि व अन्य लिपियों की उपज हुई और फिर इनकी बदौलत दक्षिणपूर्व एशिया की कई लिपियाँ बनीं।

तीसरी सदी में भट्टिप्रोलु बौद्ध धर्म का एक बड़ा केन्द्र था, यहीं से बौद्ध धर्म पूर्वी एशिया में फैला। आधुनिक तेलुगु लिपि भट्टिप्रोलु लिपि या 'कन्नड-तेलुगु लिपि' से ही जनित है, इसे 'प्राचीन कन्नड़ लिपि' भी कहते हैं क्योंकि कन्नड़ से इसकी समानता काफ़ी है

शुरुआत में कुछ छोटे बदलाव हुए, उससे जो लिपि बनी उसे अब तमिल ब्राह्मी कहते हैं, इसमें कुछ अन्य भारतीय लिपियों के मुकाबले कहीं कम अक्षर हैं क्योंकि इसमें अलग से महाप्राण या सघोष व्यंजन नहीं हैं। बाद में ग्रन्थ के प्रभाव से वेट्टुळुतु का प्रादुर्भाव हुआ जो कि आधुनिक मलयालम लिपि जैसी दिखती है। १९वीं और २०वीं सदी में और भी बदलाव हुए ताकि छपाई और टंकण के लिए सुविधा हो और इस प्रकार समकालीन लिपि सामने आई।
